Need more ports on your Dell laptop? A docking station is your solution.

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Many routine Dell laptop users would hardly contemplate the benefits of owning a Dell laptop docking station.  However, for those who are tech savvy and want the absolute best for their laptops, most likely already own a docking station.  Basically, what the docking station provides are additional ports and the ability to connect and disconnect from those ports with one easy on/off connection.  This saves you the time and hassle from manually disconnecting your video source, internet, printer and usb devices each one by one.

So is there actually a solution to this kind of a problem? Certainly, and the easiest and most economical way out of this kind of a predicament is using a Dell laptop docking station. A dell laptop docking station will give you the comfort of connecting your laptop to multiple devices at the same time, especially ones that you cannot connect to using your laptop.

A Dell laptop docking station broadly speaking costs $150 plus. However, the basic models have limited number of ports and therefore less preferable. Also, the cost will vary from one model to another and not every model of Dell laptop docking station will be compatible with your laptop. So, before you purchase a Dell laptop docking station cross check with your vendor whether or not the particular docking station is compatible with your laptop.

Apart from that Dell laptop docking stations are also available in wireless models. One of the most popular models and one of the up-to-date docking stations from Dell is the Wireless Docking Station (make Dell). No wires committed, all that one has to do is install it and configure it to connect it with your laptop. You can add devices like external audio-video devices, printers, memory devices etc. The range though is not much and this device is missing an Ethernet port. It works well within a range of 2 meters from the laptop.

In addition to this one the regular wired Dell laptop docking stations are also available. However, you must be careful while choosing one and make sure that it is compatible with your Dell laptop. Also, make sure it has all the ports that you need. Some of the other popular models Dell D/Dock Expansion Station for Dell Latitude D series (for latitude range of laptops) and Port replicators for the Inspiron series.

While there are hundreds of vendors selling these products, it is extremely important for you to identify the genuine Dell laptop docking stations from the fake ones. One of the best ways is to ask for a warranty on your part. A genuine seller will extend at least 6 months warranty on a brand new Dell laptop docking station. Also, in addition to that ask for a proper bill which mentions the part number distinctly. Don’t be fooled a by seller who offers to sell the same Dell laptop docking station for less without a warranty card or bill since the part that he is selling could very well be fake or a used part.

Replace or Refill an Ink Cartridge

Friday, May 28th, 2010

An ‘ink cartridge or ‘inkjet cartridge’ is a and disposable printer accessory of an inkjet printer that holds the ink (and sometimes the print-head itself) that is spread on the printer paper while printing is taking place

every manufactured ink cartridge contains one or more partitioned ink reservoirs; some manufacturers have added electronic contacts and a chip that communicates with the printer.

The fact is, there are now many compatible ink cartridges and refill kits on the market these days , most people now a days have stopped buying those expensive brand name cartridges from the big guys . The fact you can do your printing for much less, probably at a fraction of the cost in fact, switching is not only a wise decision, but an easy one too . Once you’ve sworn off OEM cartridges, the next important decision is whether you should refill your ink cartridge yourself or purchase compatible OEM cartridges . Considering these factors might make your decision a little easier .

Cost: One factor you’ll want to take into consideration before you decide if you should refill your ink cartridges or get OEM replacement ones is the cost. Whatever you decide , you’ll definitely spend less than those who decides to purchase OEM cartridges . Replacement cartridges are most likely available at a cost that is half or even less than those manufactured and sold by the major printer manufacturers. Obviously, these savings will add up.

Refilling your cartridges yourself, however, you will no dought save a lot of money . Most ink cartridges these days can be refilled several times - from 2 up to abut 10 times before a new cartridge will have to be purchased. So, if you refill a £20 cartridge 10 times before buying a new one, that’s a savings of £200! The refill kits themselves vary in price, but a typical kit from an online printer ink store that fills a cartridge twice might cost around £10. Since 5 kits would cost £50, your actual savings would be an impressive £250.

You’ll also want to think about the amount of effort involved in each choice. Generic cartridges are very easy to use; they work the exact same way as OEM cartridges . Just remove them from the packaging, install them into the printer, and you’re ready to go . Refill kits, on the other hand, are definitely more work. You may have to remove the top from the cartridge and inject ink using a syringe. You may also have to drill into the cartridge slightly before you can inject the ink.

Printing Needs: Replacement cartridges are more expensive but easier to use .  While the refilling of ink cartridge results in more savings, it definately requires more Edit effort . Perhaps your decision should ultimately be made based on your personal printing needs. If you only print occasionally, and printer cartridges are not a substantial expense in your home, you may decide that refilling is simply not worth the effort and go with replacement cartridges. On the other hand, if your printer is constantly spitting out detailed photographs of your kids, pets, and family vacations, it may be worth the extra effort to refill your printer ink cartridges.

Whatever decision you make , you can feel good knowing you’re sending a message to your printer manufacturer, and saving you hard earned cash as well .

How to Transfer Files to New Computer

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

When searching for PC to PC file trasnfer, the most common solution that PC users consider is the usage of external data storage devices such as DVD, CD, memory stick or external hard disk drives. However, these classical methods are not always the best solution, especially in the case of large volumes of data when multiple DVDs should be burned just for a one time transfer.

This process should not be used to transfer over custom settings and user accounts. If you have very little files and no custom data settings to transfer over than this is the way to go.

In order to learn how to Trasnfer Files to the new computer that has just been purchased, it is very important to first identify what files and data should be copied, what is their media type and size and how important are they for your daily activities. In this way, if the data that need to be transferred to the new computer has a large volume and is of very high importance to the user, special software and special file transfer conditions should be considered.

For those that need to transfer over programs then you will need to use a third party program because the easy transfer method will not work for this. There is only one single program out there that can transfer over your current software program onto a new computer.  to learn more about it check out this computer to computer file transfer site.

The Easy Transfer Wizard from Microsoft is a built in tool that can migrate over much of what you may need.  While the software does a decent job of porting over user data and documents many find they have to run the program a few times to get all the data they want to transfer. Please note that in order to transfer over program settings you first need to install those program on the new computer that you want those custom settings to be on.

Common problems with notebook batteries.

Monday, May 24th, 2010

In  common notebooks  the battery is directly connected to the system board, also known as a motherboard or logic board.  However, all notebook computers have a battery pack that provides power to the laptop while not connected to the AC power adaptor.  Notebook  batteries come in many different shapes and sizes which means they are model particular.  As in the Dell laptop battery, for example, the part number can be found  behind the battery pack on a bar-coded label.  It usually begins with “CNxxx” or “D/PNxxx.”

The laptop’s battery life depends upon factors and issues such as : LCD screen brightness level and intensity, the temperature of the working environment, the amount of CPU usage from programs being used as well as many other factors.

The notebook  battery may hold a longer charge  if you optimize the power usage settings in the control panel. There you can subordinate screen brightness; lower  CPU processing speed, adjust  cooling method, and other options.  Some of these adjustments  can only be circumscribed through the manufacturer’s power management software.

Identifying  laptop battery problems :

Let’s assume your notebook stopped running on the battery power.  However, it works fine from the AC adapter but shuts down as soon as you  unplug the adapter.  If that’s the case, try reconnecting the main battery. Remove it from the notebook and install it again. It’s possible the battery is not making good connection with the motherboard .

Ultimately, the easiest way  to diagnose the battery is by exchanging it with another known good battery.  If the laptop cannot detect the battery , even though it is installed, try replacing the battery with a new one.  If you still have the same issue, most likely there is a problem with the system board and a motherboard replacement  will be necessary.

Keep in mind that batteries are consumable items and over time they will wear down.  When this happens, the battery will hold a charge for noticably less time causing it to nonetheless not hold a charge at all or for only a few minutes.
